Get Rid of Bedbugs – Eliminate this Blood Sucking Nightmare

Bedbugs are increasingly becoming a major problem in our urban areas. More and more of us are being infested by these unpleasant parasites. Insecticides are only part of the solution. To thoroughly get rid of bedbugs, you also need a good cleaning plan.

Bedbugs are nasty little insects that bite, leaving ugly, itchy welts on your skin. Unfortunately, you can’t get rid of bedbugs on your own. It takes a combination of hard work from you and the services of an exterminator to eliminate these nastiest of the creepy crawlies. The bad news is that bedbugs are most likely to infest the area where you sleep.

These parasites will ruin your bedding and your bed’s mattress with black smears of blood and their own faeces. Bites will itch painfully, and may become infected when scratched. Remain exposed to these little critters for more than a few weeks and you’ll become increasingly sensitised to their saliva. This could result in intense allergic reactions.

Clothing, furniture, rugs and carpets are all at risk of infestation. Any surface covered with material can become a home to these bugs, if it is near to a food source – which is you. Bedbugs feed entirely on blood from warm blooded animals.

Lift up a button on the mattress, or the edge of a seam. Bedbugs react quickly and violently to light. These insects move so quickly, you may only see a flicker.

It is highly important that you get rid of bedbugs in an organised and thorough fashion. Do not just throw out the mattress or bed. Also, bugs or their eggs could still be present in your clothes, the bed frame, and bedding.

Contact an exterminator or pest control operator

Alternatively, call your local authority and ask for their pest control officer or environmental services department. If you are a council tenant, this will be free. If you’re not then there will be a charge and this varies between local authorities.

A pest control service or exterminator will do two treatments. Usually each bedroom is treated, with furnishings around the room sprayed and the insides of any wardrobes. If you have material covered furniture like a lounge suite, this should also be sprayed.

Once you’ve taken the necessary steps to get rid of bedbugs, it is important to prevent a repeat infestation. Used furniture might provide a route into your house for the bugs. Bedbugs can also be introduced via objects such as clothing and pillows when moved between homes or hotels.

In new homes, no matter how clean, the insects might already be present. Unfortunately, these parasites are capable of surviving for many months without food. Also, they can move between properties, through cracks in the walls. Thankfully, these insects can’t fly.

Insecticides alone won’t ensure you are bug free. It is important that rooms are cleared of clutter, to reduce the number of places they can hide. You should also thoroughly clean throughout the sleeping areas before treatment takes place. Scrub surfaces using a stiff brush, to ensure eggs are dislodged. Vacuum thoroughly, and take precautions when disposing of the refuse bag.

If you follow these steps, you should find that you not only get rid of bedbugs in your house, but you will also stay bug free in the future too.

To get rid of bedbugs permanently, do not vacuum for three weeks following treatment to ensure the insecticide is left to work on eggs that subsequently hatch.
